If we look up tablature in the dictionary we get: Music. A system of notation using letters, symbols, or other visual cues instead of standard notation to indicate how a musical piece is to be played. For example, guitar or banjo tablature typically consists of a diagram of the strings with finger positions indicated by numerals corresponding to the appropriate frets. So, that means ther is such a thing as sax tab, but its not tab as we think of it as for guitar. You would be better off learning to read music because if you ever plan to be in an atual band playing sax, you will most likley have to be able to read music

I have been playing Alto sax for about 5 years now, I can obviously read proper sheet music, I learned to play the correct way. BUT being in a ska band, it is hard to find sheet music for amazing bands like Streetlight Manifesto... So you have to look for a summary of the notes, to be very technical there is no such thing as sax tableture, like stated above tabs were created for freted instruments, I have played guitar for about 9 years now, I think it is funny when someone asks me about tabs for sax, it sounds funny, but I`m not a jerk and just blow them off, I tell them what the difference is, and still try to point them towards something to help them out. www.horntabs.net is the only site I know of that has `tabs` but they arent the greatest, best thing to do is take your time listening carefully to a song, and just play play play till you get it all right. Well good luck.

If you guys have been playing for five years you should be good enough to either make up your own solos, write them down using standard notation (good free program is noteworthy composer) or listen to the song and work it out from there. Obviously some people have better ears for music than others. Practice is the main thing. I was in a ska band for a few years, the trumpets were really crap and you have no idea how annoying it is to try and work with trumpets who are trying to read tabs. there is paper everywhere and they only use it to work out the notes anyway. USE YOUR EARS

Think that the problem here isn`t that tabs are rubbish it`s that you can`t tab for sax the same as you can for say the bass. we need a short hand way of writing riffs etc that doesn`t involve having to use crazy software or pay for sheet music!!

Okay. I`ve been playing alto saxophone for 6 years. So obviously I`ve been able to read music only a couple years longer than I`ve been able to read. You CANNOT get decent sheet music for ska/punk etc. Okay? You just can`t. Nobody writes that stuff down. So what if you can`t recognise notes by ear? Tabs is the answer. If you look at www.capdown.net they have sax tabs! their really useful, only if you like capdown but who doesn`t like capdown?! Okay so like RIGHT NOW I`m gonna find all the fluffing sax tabs I can find and stick em on my site. I`ll keep you posted.

My reply is for Thomas. My drum kit does not possess a keyboard, fretts or even strings but guess what... could it be that you are misinformed.? there ARE millions of Tabbs on the internet that are available to download for drummers to use. Tabs are not only for string instruments and Im sure that if more people thought about tabbing for other instruments it could be done. How about nameing the particular Key of the song.. then representing each pitch via a numeral. ie. 1= tonic, 2=supertonic, 3= mediant etc.... rhythem could be represented like any other tablature. Personally I Prefer to read music but tabs do have their place in the creative world of musicians.

Maybe you didn`t notice it earlier, but this is a saxophone forum, not a drum forum.
I am not uninformed, because I know for a fact that nobody has ever tried to create a system of tabbed notation for wind instruments. The reason for this simple - tablature for a wind instrument would be far too complicated to even attempt.
Tablature for string instruments is simple enough - there are 6 lines on the staff, each representing a string on the instrument. The numbers represent fret numbers, and are arranged rhythmically.
Think about attempting to do this for a wind instrument. There are 24 keys on an alto saxophone (with high F#), so it would be rather difficult to devise a simpler notation other than the one most people use. If you can think of a feasable way to write saxophone tabs, or if you can find one, then I stand corrected. However, until that happens, I am pretty confident that sax tabs do not exist.
