What can I do if I`m following a "not so good" sax tutor?

I`m new in saxophone, started 2 months ago, playing alto now.
Actually I`m not sure my tutor is good for me or not coz I`m so new in saxophone playing. But he keeps on telling me sth which I quite wonder. I`ve made some search in the internet and read some books. What he said are quite contradicted to most of my searches. Let says he said yamaha is not good, and asked me to buy a brand called Limax...I can`t find any infomation for this. And said Rico`s reeds are suck. Also, when I asked why my saxophone seems out of tune, he said it doesn`t make sence at all coz the sax is new.......later I found it by myself tuning is affected by the positin of the mothpiece on the cork....

What do you think? Should I continue to follow this tutor. I really can`t sure what he teaches me right or not. And one thing, I thought he is a seller rather that a tutor in my impression, always selling sth to me which later I found it`s cheaper outside.

It appears that this sax teacher does not know what he/she is talking about. Rico Reeds are inexpensive and not the best available, but they are the industry standard for beginners. Spending more for reeds is probably not worth the money for at least a year.

I have never heard of Limax saxophones. Yamaha makes good instruments. Many will argue that Selmer is better or Keilworth is better etc., but Yamaha makes a quality instrument. In the end each player will decide what is best in their own opinion.

I don`t know if you mean the tuning note is out of tune on your horn. This can be corrected by pushing in or pulling out your mouthpiece. Saxophones, as with woodwind instruments will have certain notes that are not perfrctly in tune. You will have to learn over the years to adjust your embouchure to compensate. Good saxes are close all the way up and down the range of the instrument, but no instrument is perfectly in tune, new or not.

I would recommend getting a new teacher. This one seems to have a seperate agenda.

Chohin,

Good for you for taking the initiative on your own! I had a really horrible piano teacher for 2 years before I realized what a stupid mistake I was making. I think that is why I don`t play piano as well as the sax now.

I agree with Mike, your teacher sounds like a real moron. Chances are, if we haven`t heard of this so-called "Limax" saxophone company, it doesn`t exist. Even if it does, I would definitely not take a chance like that and go for one of the more well known brands of sax (Selmer, Yamaha, Keilwerth, etc.). Even if some guy had a brilliant idea, and started this company, he just doesn`t have credibility and background to back him up.

Don`t let some dumb teacher get in the way of your music. There are plenty of others out there, and if you have a band director, I`m sure they would be able to recommend some local teachers to you.

Cheers,

Thomas

Im now finding another teacher. Hope that I can find a better one. But I`ve already bought that "unknown branding" saxophone. I`m so regret on this.......

Oh, you`ve already bought it. Well, you could play it for a while and see how it goes. If this company is any good, they`ll let you return it for a full refund (should you need to do so). Good luck with finding a new teacher, and keep playing!
