Here are the 4 points I look for in a sight-reading piece:
1. Key Signature and accidentals
2. Time and Rhythm
3. Articulations and Inflections
4. Dynamics
Look this all over before you play, and finger and articulate through the piece at tempo without blowing any air through your instrument (judges take points off if you do). Then, play away, making sure you get the four things as good as you can get them.

Sharps and flats
Time Signature
Accidentals
Rythms
Symbols
