Krissy,

You don`t have to learn just one sax. In fact, it is a good thing to play more than one. The saxophone is a family of instruments - a very large family. The saxophones that are commercially available, from lowest to highest, are:

- Bb sub-contrabass
- Eb contrabass
- Bb bass
- Eb baritone
- Bb tenor
- Eb alto
- Bb soprano
- Eb sopranino
- Bb soprillo

The lowest three and the highest two are not commonly played in many ensembles. You`ll probably never even see them in your life unless you look really hard. As a result, many people only know of the four common saxophones: bari, tenor, alto, and soprano.

For any beginner, the alto or the tenor are both ideal choices to start on. The tenor is more widely accepted as a jazz instrument, even though the alto has had some damn good contributions to this musical form. The alto has much more classical repertoire than the tenor, but the tenor can still sound beautiful as a classical instrument. There really is no better choice - it is completely up to you.

It`s good to see that more people are joining the metaphorical "saxophone club". Good luck in your playing, and stick with the saxophone! You`ll be glad you did.

Thomas
