Vintage:
King Super 20 Silver-Sonic (amazingly gorgeous)
Couf Superba I Black Nickel
Buescher 400

New:
Yamaha YAS-82Z in Black Lacquer, Unlacquered (nice patina), or silver finishes.

All of the above horns have blurbs about them on www.saxpics.com

If you`re going for an LA Sax, get the Chicago Jazz Series (they`re the good ones). They`re made by B&S of Germany (who made Guardalas) and they look really cool.

The cannonball saxes are amazing (looks) and play good, but arn`t the best playing saxes out there. at least from what i`ve gathered. I liked the one I played, but whatever.

I own custom Guardala horns (Alto and Tenor). I would put them up against ANY horn from ANY year including new models. They have absolutely incredible intonation and projection. You just can`t find them new anywhere anymore. Having said this, I need to tell you. BleedingGumsMurphy is correct. The LA Sax Chicago Jazz Series horns are in fact made in Germany by B&S.

My Guardala horns came out of the same factory. The LA Sax Chicago Jazz Series is virtually identical to The Guardala saxophones. There are some extremely minor differences that do not effect the playability whatsoever so I am not going to get into it. I will tell you that the black nickel finish on these horns is one of the best in the industry with regard to depth and resiliency. As for sound, they are very much like my Guardalas......BIG and FAT.

As I tell EVERYONE....play different horns and DECIDE FOR YOURSELF what works best for you. You can rely on "opinions" of qualified people for guidance if you choose to. Don`t rely on the opinion of a person who is just trying to make you buy the same horn they own because they "think" it`s the best.

Decide how much you can afford to spend, then buy the best horn you can get in that price range. All too often, people do this backwards. They try to find the best saxophone out there by consensus, regardless of price tag, and then sell their soul to try to get it.

Somebody once said in this forum that Charlie Parker would own all of us on a Bundy. That is one of the most profound statements I`ve ever read in this forum. Yes....it is true. You need good equipment that is in proper adjustment. That is a must or you will be fighting a losing battle. What I`m really trying to say here is that it`s not all up to the horn. The person playing it is really the most important aspect of the final outcome.

I`ll close now and tell you that I completely endorse the LA Sax Chicago Jazz line of horns. Tom Scott is wailing away on them these days. If you really want a cool looking horn that plays equally as well, check out the Burnished Brass series from LA Sax. Jay Beckenstein (Spyro Gyra) is playing one and absolutely loves it.

Don`t take my word for it. For the money, LA Sax is one of the best horns you can buy.

Give Jerry a call at Orpheus Music and tell him I sent you. They are the sole distributor for these horns.

I belive the comment about Charlie Parker was mine. Thanks. I asked you awile back about the reference 54; I played one recently, and like it quite a bit, more so then the yamaha 875 EX.

San Antonio Texas? Dang, I was just there. Now I`m 12 hours away from the border. The place I found those saxes was at one of the brook mays, if your not familiar with the chain, there about 10 all around Dallas ranging from loads of keyboards to pianos, brass, sheetmusic, everything, really.

Yes....you will find them in many stores. My point is that it starts with Orpheus. If you have the latest WWBW catalog. Chicago Jazz owns the back cover of the catalog. No matter where you see these horns, they all come from right here in San Antonio when they are shipped from Germany. Orpheus sends them to the retailers. If you get your horn directly from Orpheus, you should be able to get it cheaper. I know Jerry very well and he will work with you.

sorry, but whats the WWBW? How could I get one? Just to clarify, I am not trying to contradict your statements; I have never played or heard any LA sax or Orpheus or the like. I`m actually intrigued and would like to look into them.

WWBW stands for Woodwind Brasswind. Their website is http://www.wwbw.com. They are a huge retailer that sells the Chicago Jazz Series horns. If you want to get more information on the saxes, just call Orpheus Music at the number I provided above. Ask for Jerry and tell him Mike Spurlock sent you.

I know you are not trying to contradict. I just wanted to make sure I was clear. We`re all friends here. ;-)

I personly love selmers. BleedingGumsMurfy and Mvspur will disagree strongly. Course, depends which sax your looking at. I mean, which selmer? And, silver saxes look great; if your willing to give it extra care form tarnishing
