ummm. no teacher?? thatll be realy tough cause da sax is 1 instrument you cant get very far with without a teacher cause youre basics will never be good. learn from someone for atleast 5-6 months and by then you should be able to continue by yourself. trust me, i first tried to learn the sax from this book my friend told me about and by the end of one month i still couldnt get that sound out the mouth piece. now ive been learning from a professionel for 2 and a half years and everyone says im pretty good. i play at almost every function on at school, twice on the radio and was in the school band when i was in boaring school. so get yourself a teacher!!

I had a teacher but, now looking for another. I think it is important mainly due to mistakes in sound, or mecahnics of playing we just don`t hear or see. A good teacher can bring out the best in us... there is another side to the coin they are expensive. I had an instructor who charged me 40 dollars a month. Now I go shopping for an instructor and they want 40 dollars a half hour !!??
Untill I find one I can afford.. I will just keep playing along with Jamey Ambersol tapes and CD`s

(Hi)

Well it helps if you play other instruments because i played violin, piano and a bit of flute when i taught myself but as long as you have te right books and understand the fundamentals of music you can go far! I got to grade 5 (ABRSM) without a teacher so go for it!!

Seriously the saxophone is the easiest instrument to play wrong. Which means it is really easy to get tones out of it but, do they sound good? If you can find a teacher, just to make sure you have all your basics down, you will be way ahead of the game. If you have a local University call the music dept. theirs always sax students looking to give private lessons, and usually at a much cheaper rate than professional lessons.
