Hi, Im Deena and im starting sax on friday. I`m normally a flute player and have been for 6 years but I need a change...

i need help regarding reeds. today i went to a music store. Now the lady up front told me that 1.5 reeds were good to start with but they maybe too soft. She suggested a 2....and yea it may be a small bit harder but that they won`t run down as easy as 1.5`s.

And she gave me the RICO brand....was the RICO 2 a good choice?

If anything....a 2 might be too soft....

Rico`s are great for the cost...and many pros still use Rico`s........You should be fine. Need anything...just drop me a line. I`ve been playing Tenor Sax for a long time now. I have and do play many other instruments...but nothing could replace my tenor

Ok, so ill lay it out for every pre-teen saxophone "i know everything players" out on these forums...Some of the MOST SUCCESSFUL Saxophone players today still use 2/2.5 reeds. Ok the stronger the reed, the crappier you play GENERALLY, yes yes ur sound is more articulate, but at the cost of your tone quality and air support. Play it smart with a few 1.5 reeds and 2 reeds to find ur fit. I play a 2.5 reed, been playing the alto for 8 years now, in two bands, and still find time to look good doing it. Sorry about the outburst, but it tends to get really annoying when little saxophone children think the stronger the reed, the cooler you are...i say to them...."go home".....go home...

i would think the softer reeds would make it easier to play anyway....cause your right, then you can focus more on air support and other stuff like that....thanks for the great advice! yea, i heard rico was a pretty good brand AFTER i bought the RICO reeds so that`s good...i have one 2 and one 2.5 but my "tutor" friend Jimmy said that we`ll see how i do on a two and then go from there...thanks for the help again!

regarding jeff... reed strength is mostly personal preference. However, its` best to start off with weaker reeds to build up your emboucher. NOw, as for reed strengths... I`ve found that, contrary to what jeff said, stronger reeds make your tone better, assuming you build up to it. weaker reeds have thier advantages though. Easier for vibrato, smearing, and they are louder. Personly, i find that your tone is worse. Now, instead od denouncing what jeff said, for example calling him a "pre teen wannabe", i`ll jsut say that there is personal opinion in this, and i certainly don`t doubt your abilitis jeff, i`m just commenting that what you think is best may not best for some1 else.
