hey. i`ve been playing alto and bari sax for 10 or so years, but since those are in the same key i didnt need to know anything different. i just got a tenor sax and was wondering if you could give me any tips for what i would need to know. like what is the general tuning scale on a tenor(where on my alto it would go from g to high g with an f#). is there really anything to know or can i just plug away at it pretending it was an alto?

I pretty much play em all the same. The tenor is in the key of Bb, like a trumpet.

Perhaps you should have done some research before actually purchasing an instrument? I would think you should know a couple things about the tenor before going out and buying one, unless you are using a school`s instrument.

Welcome to tenor, as far as key goes, tenor is a B-flat instrument, in the simplist terms when you play a C it sounds like a B-flat in concert key. When you mentioned general tuning scale your actually talking about a concert B-flat scale, alto would be in the key of G and tenors would be in the key of C. Another way to look at it, is to add 2 sharps to your concert key. If you were asked to play a concert G major scale (1 Sharp) you would play a A major scale on tenor (3 sharps). Like both horns you need good air support, especially for tenor when getting down below low D, you will find you can play low B-flat soft, if you get enough air support. Also the palm keys can sound a bit thin on tenor, because it is eaiser to get those notes by tightening your embouchore, work on keeping your embouchore the same. Thats really about it, of course there are a bunch of little quirks but you will find them out.
Cheers
CJ
