ive been playing alto for 3 years now and love to play. I want to try tenor sax because i lyk the clarity of the low notes. I know its the same fingering as alto but the mouthpiece is larger. Will this be a hard thing to do? any info would be great.....

IT ISN`T MUCH HARDER, BUT IT TAKES A WHOLE LOT OF AIR OUT OF YOU. IT IS WORTH IT THOUGH WITH THE SOUND YOU GET. I KNOW BECAUSE I MARCH WITH ALTO AND TENOR, AND PLAY TENOR AND BARITONE IN CLASS.

it`s not to much different, you hold the mouthpiece a bit different in your mouth, more striaght while an alot is a bit more angled. If you play sax, you might as well learn to play em all.

You will have to change your embouchure a bit, also on Tenor you will have a tendency to tighten your jaw as you get into your palm keys, while it will be easier to do that at first, don`t it will develop bad habits, the tenor sound can get very thin in the palms. Also on alto, sometimes you will get a wierd (A) sound when playing your high D sometimes. This is common with G on the tenor especially when you go from high B to G. These are problems inherint in the saxophone but can be overcome if you are aware of it.
Now that you are going to tenor have you thought about mouthpiece? I would suggest a Rousseau 5 for classical and Otto-link super tone master for Jazz.

Good luck
CJ

Ive started to play tenor since xmas and I lyk it my new meyer mouthpiece with a rovna ligature comes in tommorow. Is it common to mess up on the e on the staff. I think its my mouthpiece that came with the horn. All the notes are good except for the e on the staff i need to position my mouth in one exact spot on the mouthpiece if i dont it sounds like an e with the octave key on the staff not the low e.If im lookin for the low e i always mess up cuz i always try to play it and it sounds like I have the octave key on. Its not leaking cuz other notes arent lyk that. Any suggestions.I think it was the mouthpiece cuz its a cheap horn and a cheap plastic mouthpiece.

Try using warm air when you play, like fogging up a window in the winter also suppport your air. Take a piece of paper, put it against the wall take a deep breath and keep it and blow hard, that is the feeling you should have in your diaphram when you play. Breath is especially important playing the lower register on the tenor.

Good Luck

Also I should mention since it is a newly bought horn, take it in and get checked out, just in case there are any leaks or problems.
