I would stay away from eBay. There are a bunch of hacks on there that will take your money and leave you with one of the bottom of the barrel Asian horns, made out of what amounts to tin foil.

$300 is a pretty small range... I don`t think eBay in itself is bad, but you have to be extremely careful, and I`m not sure that it would be worth the risk.
From my own experiences, I would recommend a Yamaha YAS-23 (or I`ve heard the 52s are good too). I started out with a Selmer Bundy my first year (shudder) and then got the Yamaha my second year and it lasted me all the way through the start of my senior year of high school. The Yamaha I got was used and about $800, so we financed it and paid it off over several months` time.
As for colors, my new saxophone is a black lacquered Yamaha YAS-82z custom, and while I still don`t believe the color changes the texture to any really noticable difference, it`s one of the most beautiful horns you`ll find and I love it just for the compliments I get (along with the fact that it plays unbelievably). But, it does cost about $200 or $300 more for the black coloring along (at least for this sax), which was okay since we really invested in this one. In other words, if your price range is already low I doubt you`ll end up with one starting out.
All in all, I`d recommend, if you can, investing a little in a really good student horn that will last you for a while until you decide if you`re a lot more serious about saxophone. Check local music stores for used horns and see if you can finance, and Woodwind & Brasswind (www.wwbw.com) is another great site with great prices that lets you finance (where I`m getting my new sax from now).
Good luck
