Hi,

Im an orchestral composer and all things sax are pretty new to me. I am currently writing a piece that features an alto and tenor sax and I was just wondering if the instruments are capable of playing "shakes" "falls" and "rips" similar to the trumpets. What other extended techniques can the instrument employ?

Thanks in advance

Copy and paste that. It`s a brief discussion of saxophone techniques. I guess shakes, falls, and rips are probably possible on a saxophone, but highly inconvenient.

Hi Brad,

Pick up a small book by Alfred publishing called "Essential Dictionary of Orchestration", it shows briefly what a saxophone is capable of and it is an extremely useful book when scoring. The book is pocket sized and about $6.00. This should help you get started at least.

Good Luck
