in my opinion this guy stinks he thinks he can impress people because he can play a note for 45min. but i learned he can cycle breath and he cant tounge right i mean comeon
Just joined this forum and having trawled a few other sax forums I can't believe all the carping about Kenny G. Goof grief are there some bitter sax players out there! I'm a muso of some lengthy exeprience and play a variety of instruments including being a relative newcomer to sax ( alto for 4 years and just taken up soprano and loving it).
Can Kenny G play - of course he can. He clevery spotted a niche in the market and went for it, or maybe his agent did. His sound and style got labled smooth jazz, or even dinner jazz on some UK radio stations such as jazz FM. Is that his fault...NO. Does he play jazz;no not in the spirit of the genre which basically adheres to the rule if you play it same twice it's not improvised any more and therefore not jazz. However I've been to numerous so called jazz gigs/clubs where I've listened to the same arrangement, licks and solos week after week. Did it sound good...yes... was it improvised.....no.
Kenny G does what he does very well. He comes as a package and whether you like it or not is a matter of personal taste, but saying he can't play is like saying Keith Emmerson coudn't play piano because you liked Oscar Peterson. They are both good, both unique, but in different styles.
Come on saxophonists, stop being anal about your instrument and just get on with playing it....in your own style.
