Fist off.. How many people here play soprano sax? Kind of a repetitive question, yes. But I play this fine instrament and after playing alto and tenor, I like it most.

In band, I just play the trumpet music because it`s the same key and soprano sax music is kind of hard to come by, that leads me to my question.

Does anyone here have and/or know any site I get get music? Preferably jazz, blues, pop, or rock tunes. I spose trumpet is alwasy good, but does anybody have soprano sax music?

I play soprano in my school`s pit orchestra, and I play around with it a bit on the side at home. It`s not easy to find music written for soprano sax, so I would use music written for tenor or Bb trumpet. Another suggestion is to buy any of the Aebersold books and play the Bb instrument parts. The Aebersolds are also a great way to help with improvisation, etc.

yeah, I play the sop. Kindof funny, this, but I own and play a curved sop, and i recently tried to play a straight one and couldn`t do nuthen on it. haha. probably trying to play it to much like a clarinet. just thought that was weird. I don`t like the straight ones.

I can`t stand straight ones either. They sound too much like oboes to me. The curved ones still retain the saxophone sound, even though they`re higher pitched.

Is the fingering for the soprano exactly the same as for the tenor?

Are there many difficulties involved in learning to play the tenor if you`ve only had experience on the soprano (or vice versa)? Or are the differences vastly overshadowed by the similarities?

yes, all saxes have the some fingerings. As for how different they are, between a tenor and sop it`s a purdy big difference, but if you play sax you might as well be able to play them all.

Oh so all the saxes have the same fingering? I thought the soprano and tenor has the same fingering cos they`re both Bb instruments, and the alto and bari has another set of fingerings cos they`re both Eb instruments.

Are the differences simply between the Bb and Eb in the written music?

ya, they have the same fingerings, but are in different keys. Basicly, the sop is 1/2 octave above alto, and alto is 1/2 octave above tenor, and so on. the note names and fingering are the same, just the key is different, like a concert Bb is a G on alto and a C on tenor

I absolutely never knew that, thanks!

So I guess you could develop familiarity with the soprano and tenor because they`re both in the same key, and the same for the alto and baritone.

I`m wondering, why is it many players I see usually play the two instruments in the same key?

you mean to say, why do many players play sop and tenor and then bari and alto? If so, I wasn`t aware of that. And glad I could help.
