A lot of ppl switch from saxophone to flute or the other way around. I play flute and I ALWAYS wanted to play the saxophone. I`ve been playing the flute for about 4 years. Is saxophone hard? I know that getting the right embrochure(can`t spell) is REALLY hard on the flute. I want to try the saxophone, but the last time i tried to blow in it..i couldn`t even get a sound right. I guess it`s because no one told me how to blow..or how to place your lips. so, is it hard?

there's not a lot of saxophones in a band. The one i've been in had only 2 and like 25 flutes. In my school band we have WAY TOO MANY saxophones. Half the band is saxophones. Even though some ppl in our school, play with nasty sounds. I've heard really good saxophone ppl play..like jazz. i love jazz. yup.^^

Saxophone is actually pretty easy to play, but difficult to sound good (if that makes sence). If you play flute you shouldn`t have a problem playing sax, the fingerings are similar. I started playing flute and clarinet this year because I have to double on them as a Jazz major. Alot of saxophone parts have a flute or clarinet part in them. Have someone show you if you are interested its a great instrument to play, and it would only benefit you to learn another woodwind.

Good Luck

Hey, flute is my first instrument and a few months ago my music teacher asked me if i fancied playing sax as a second instrument and the only thing that struck me was the breathing. After a few weeks of playing i was fine and it really helps your flute playing too just as long as you dont play both on the same day, you either find yourself having a good sax day or a good flute day. The embouchure isn`t that hard to get to grips with once you`ve played a few times. Good luck!

Actually Flute is in the key of C, Tenor and Soprano are in the Key of Bb and Alto and Bari are in the key of Eb. Air shouldn`t really be an issue to you, if you already play flute, just remember to use warm are when you play, especially in the lower register. Like fogging up a window in the winter.

Good Luck

Is the embrochure(cantspell) easier on the sax then the flute. Because on the flute it takes a long time to master the right kind of embrochure, unless you`re lucky. On the sax, i think..you make a "m" kind of lip form...right? and where do you hit your tongue to play a note?

i`ve only played the flute for 2 years but i actually just a week ago switched to the tenor sax so i could be in jazz band.i had my band teacher show me how to blow and i went and got fingerings and i can already play alot of songs.it`s really fun.this might be hard to understand but for the embocure(i`m not gonna try to spell that right)he said to place the mouth peice in your mouth aboutan inch and a half in at an angle.the like a rubber band around a newspaper scweeze(srry i spelled that wrong but i`m not gonna fix it) around it but pull in your lower lip in a little.then just blow.and yes almost all the fingerings are the same as the flute which i thought made it alot easier to learn.the only one that took me a while to learn was the C which on a flute isfirst and pinky and on the sax it`s ONLY the second finger on the first hand.and octve key to go up on octive.well i hope some of this helped.good luck.

oh and to separate the notes it`s "tip of the tounge to the tip of the reed" or close to it.and for a while u can just use you flute music on ur sax.i`ve been doing that but then i got a book and sheet music for it.
