Unfortunately your not going to find a really good one for 150, I sold a very old Yamaha Student for 200. You will need to go to pawn shops or stop in at your local university and ask the sax professor if they have any students wanting to sell one. You can buy from e-bay, but if your looking to spend that little you may end up with a $500 bill because more than likely you will have to get it repadded. Have you considered renting from a school or local business, that might be better than buying a low quality one, when you could put more money down for a better one in the future.

Just my 2 cents

That really depends, you can ask them, but unless they plan on getting new ones, I wouldn`t think they would sell it. When I was in High School our band would sell CD`s of our concerts and other odd`s and ends to purchase new instruments. That is something you might be able to bring up in your school, who knows you might get a saxophone out of the deal.

Good Luck

usualy i don`t belive schools can sell thier horns, but if they are donated they can give them away, i`ve recived a baritone and a few trumpets from schools which recived them. Once, the school sold one to a student, but then the school ppl made a big deal about it and investigated it all to make sure no one was ripped and stuff, then told the band not to do it again. Stupid school admistrators and thier power trips. BUt you should be able to rent from a local shop, it`ll cost you more in the end though. hope this helps some, in conjunction with cj of course.

Hmm, well does the music dept. sell them (CD`s DVD`s etc.) or just the school in general? You might be interested in a book called "Beyond the Bake Sale" I found out about it in one of my music education courses, it gives all kinds of ideas to raise money for school. However if your band doesn`t need any new instruments, you may be out of luck. If your school lacks instruments you may be able to contact "The Mr. Hollands Opus Foundation" which donates instruments to schools whose music programs are underserved. I wouldn`t suggest using them unless your school doesn`t support their music program, there are alot of schools trying to get rid of music programs, and they need them more.

Hope this gives you some idea`s

If you buy a tenor for $150 it's barely going to be suitable for parts much less to produce music.

I just bought a bari sax for a roll of quarters and a $5 mcdonald's gift card.

It's a damn fine instrument. I learned how to play it better than anyone has ever played the bari sax in the history of the world in 7 minutes. After only 8 minutes I had a platinum record of sax solos eventhough I couldn't name one single sax piece if my puberty depended on it. Tomorrow i'm getting a soprillo for my collection of alluminum pull tabs and a dried up highlighter. I'm cool.

I've remained quiet on this subject, but after reading all the treads, I have to make a comment.

Lera,
First, If I'm understanding your posts correctly, you have been playing sax for about year and you are already playing on a pro level. Is that right? I've been playing sax since 6th grade, I'm almost 40 now, and I don't play on a "pro level" even though I've been paid to play.

Second, you purchased a sax for $100, and a soprano for $50, these are not pro instruments. I'm supprised if you can even get a sound out of a $100 sax. As far as the soprano goes, intonation is difficult enough on Professional model 'nino, I can't immagine how hard it must be on a $50 soprano.

I don't mean to be critical, but it's really not necessary to build yourself up to particpate in these forums. There are players from all skill levels represented here and no one is going to think less of you if you are just a beginner or a student. If we are not there now, we were all there once.

Please continue to post, but I think you would be better served to honestly represent you skill level, or not comment on your skill level at all.

Just a little friendly advice, take it for what it's worth.
