Does anyone know of classical or movie/tv themes on cd or as sheet music for the sax?

The sax (soprano and tenor I think) sounds great in Ravel's Bolero.

The instrument is associated with mainly jazz (and also pop music a bit). Is it weird to play classical instead on the saxophone and not be currently into jazz that much (although I also like pop)?

According to "The art of Saxophone Playing" book by Larry Teal, the sax is a relatively new construction and has room for improvements. Therefore, would this have prevented music composers from adding it widely to orchestras so far?

I don't recall a sop. in Bolero. There is a tenor solo but if i'm not mistaken no soprano.

Saxophone is not an orchestral instrument. There are countless legit pieces composed for the saxophone however. You should get a private teacher. Or ask lera, she has some Celine Dion piano scores she'll trade you.

It's not strange at all to be into classical and not jazz. There is a large amount of classical literature written for the sax. Though the saxophones we're familiar with today are Bb and Eb band instruments, Adolphe Sax originally intended for it to be used in bands and orchestras and thus created saxophones in C and F for this purpose, but it never caught on...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxophone

I personally prefer classical sax over jazz any day, but that's just me.

BTW, Ravel's Bolero calls for a Sopranino Sax in F. But since those doesn't exist, people usually play it on a sopranino in Eb or a soprano in Bb.

For movie themes check out "Catch me if You Can" by John Williams. It is written for classical saxophone (with some elements of Jazz). The piece is called "Escapades" and you should be able to find it for sax and piano and sax and orchestra.
