I am an alto player but I just bought a new soprano as a "second instrument." For my alto I use a Rico (4) reed. I don`t know how hard they make them but thats the hardest I kind find at my music store. I have tried Van Doren reeds and I don`t like them for my alto so please no coments about the brand of reed.

Anyway, what strenghth of reed should I use when I start playing my new soprano?

The music I bought for the soprano won`t be shipped to me until about a week after I get my sax and the local music store doesn`t have soprano music. How to I transpose to soprano from alto AND from soprano to alto?

we do have the same case. i am also an alto player and just recently, i bought a soprano. i used 3 and 31/2 rico reeds. it sounds good to me though. just try using it. soprano is just a 4 step higher of your alto. so if you`re playing G in your alto, then the key of your soprano is C. it`s so simple. paino Bb, alto G, and soprano C. hope this helps.

heyhey guy! i have been playin alto 4 about a year now, and i want to try soprano sax but my parents wont buy me one (i`m broke) and my local music store wont let me rent one.

about the reed thing, you seem to play really hard reeds. but, soprano is such an upper register compared to alto, i would suggest you start out on a 2 1/2 or 3, and work your way up to a 4 as you improve.

have fun with ur Soprano sax! lucky you!

If you really want a soprano I`ve seen some beginner models for less than $500. Some closer to $400. You could earn that much cutting lawns or something for th rest of the summer. If you can get your parents to at least kind of back you and put there name on the bills even if they make you pay them most music stores have rent to buy programs where you would only pay $20-$50 a month. And with their name on it the music store should let you do it.

thats a good idea! actually, i have been babysitting/petsitting some already this summer, i could save some money from that. but i think i will wait until i have more experience with the alto, since i`ve only been playing for a year.

thanks!

See if you saved for a while you could get a really good brand too. Even though it is hard to save for a while when your a teenager...
