How much louder is actually a trumpet, in comparison to other wind instruments, for example the saxophone?
Does this have to do with the instrument's size, or with the fact that sound has to come out from the trumpet's bell all the way down the other end, instead of keyholes?
Perhaps the trumpet player's need for a considerable amount of puff in order to produce sufficient tone, has something to do with the trumpet's loudness as well. What do you think?

well i'd say that trumpets arent louder. i can easily out blow a sr. band member on any sax i've played.
i think trumpets are more noticible though.
um, and most of the sax's sound comes out of the bell i suspose.
oh yeah and bells of trumpets can be directed and that makes them more noticable. anyhow what do u think about that?

Good trumpet player and a good sax player of equal ability the trumpet player should be able to play louder than the sax player. It comes from the fact that most of the saxes sound does NOT come out the bell. The only note on sax that comes completely out the bell is low Bb, every other note comes out the tone holes. This is unlike a trumpet, where every note comes out the "bell" and therefore every note projects, whereas on sax only Bb projects.
