What is too expensive? Your best non-vintage horns are Yamaha, Yanagisawa, Selmer and Keilwerth. With exception of the Selmer and Yamaha student models you will not find one of these for less than $2000.00. First find out what you want to spend, one option could be to buy a used, ask around at your local university, there are usually alot of students that buy a better horn and sell their old ones.

ya the finish effects teh tone... a good site for pro horn research is www.saxforte.com
it'd take to long to explain everything here.
I have a kielwerth alto shadow and love it, it's over your price range though, depends what kindof sound you want to and all that.

Heh, I just bought a tenor about a week ago.
I usually stick with Keilwerth, as that's what my alto and soprano sax are. But I went with the "Custom-82Z", a professional model. It's probably also one of the less expensive ones around as well, as tenors can go past $4,000. This one was about $2,800. Try checking into it

um if you all can help a bit more, i like jazz A LOT. so the best sax for that maybe. also what would be a pretty dark sax. i used Yamaha and it was bright sounding, i wanna try something new. also what company's saxes have good parts. like the spring because mine always screws up.

At this point my advice would be to go to a music shop and test play each one that you're looking at and get the one that suits you best. Even if the music shop doesn't have one in stock, if you're interested in an instrument, they'll most likely have one sent to their store and you'll be able to test play it, whether you choose that one or not. Personally, I'd go with the Keilworth or the Yamaha. But some people like the Cannonballs. I haven't heard of many people liking the Jupiters. But like I said, at this point it would be best to kind of get a feel for each one before making the decision.

I agree with Contramaniac. You should test each sax first before buying one. I just recently got the Yamaha YAS-62 (alto), but before I bought it, I tested out a lot of Selmers and a few Yanagisawas. It just depends on your opinion of sound quality and if you're comfortable with the saxophone.
