Baritone is easily the best commonly available saxophone, and you can do awesome jazz stuff with it, especially improv.

I play alto, and I disagree, it doesn't sound bad, nor does it have to.
Get a skilled player on a good instrument (with a good mouth piece and the right reed), and you can have some awesome sounds happening.

Tenor is nice. It takes what you give it. Tenor responds with a smooth tone no matter how much or little experience you have.
Soprano I've always been against. Just something about being small. . .

Yup, I agree. If you put a good player on a good instrument it'll sound good. And if you put a bad player on a bad instrument it'll sound terrible, no matter how good your instrument it... It won't do a thing if the player isn't capable.

I currently play alto (and got two of 'em), but I'm thinking of also taking up tenor. Not because I dislike alto, but because I love saxophones =). So I guess it's just a personal taste as to what you want to play.

I play bari and alto. I LOVE the bari sax! Alto is good, but I only like playing notes lowewr than a middle A on them; the other notes are just too high. Bari is awsome it gives a nice harmony to almost any song, it really balances out the sound in our band( we have 14 flutes that all play too loud!).

I really like the sound of the SubContra (or Tubax) Sax.

Well actually my friend plays the Tenor Sax and plays it during the louder songs that need a boost of tenor notes and during marching band. He pairs up with me (tuba) when we play the slower songs that need that boost of a full sonorous quality to it. He plays alto if he's asked to. His favore it Tenor though.

I'm new to this whole thing, but I would like to add that I, myself, play the alto sax. I absolutly love it!! Don't get me wrong, though... I love the tenor, bari, etc...

I love the alto best! I like the the higher pitched instruments better (I think it's because I play higher pitched myself =) ) but alto is closly followed by the bari.
