Greetings All:

I travel extensively, and as a matter of fact I am currently emailing from Amman Jordan. I am trying to learn how to play the sax, and of course it means daily practice. In an effort to get better I take my saxophone (Selmar Mark VI) everywhere I go. The problem that I have is trying to practice softly,(fingering, long tones, reading etc), without disturbing the other guests. If I were an exceptional player of course everyone would love to here me practice, but since I'm new to the instrument, well you know the drill. Any suggestions??

I think there are this gig bag-like things that double as saxophone mutes. They look like a standard gig bag, but have holes to put your hands in. I think they're fairly expensive, but they may be something to look into.

Try playing with as little air as possible, but still make a noise.

Maybe try playing smooth pieces, it makes it sound softer.

Also always play legato... Staccato is quite loud.
