I know there's probably other threads here that have answered this same question, but which saxophone would be good for a beginning learner? I already know how to play piano, bassoon, and a little clarinet and baritone. I read somewhere that the first alto saxophone was made from a bassoon body and clarinet mouth-piece, so I thought it would be kind of cool to try a new instrument this summer, distantly related to what I already can play. I'm leaning towards the alto, so are there any things I should be aware about?

Most people start with the alto, but consider trying the tenor too - I found it easier to play, but I guess it also depends on the person. I'm pretty new to the sax myself, and I highly recommend picking it up. It's a blast!

Thanks! I talked to my band director about it. She says she wants me to start on tenor. Am I correct in assuming that once you learn one sax, you can play all the rest?

I play alto.

The tenors in our band get all the melody though because the trumpets can't play.

Alto is a counter melody like french horn.

Bari is like a bass clarinet. Bass lines mainly.

Soprano I am not sure.
