depends on what you want, try listening to some of the pros to see how the different saxophones and sound. Do this through kazzaa or amazon.com.
Soprano:
Kenny G
Sydney Betchet
Alto:
Paul Desmond
Cannonball Adderley
Art Pepper
Tenor:
Stan Getz
(any other are a waste of listening time)
Bari:
Pepper Adams
Gery Mulligan
See which one has the sound you like, then get it.

fool how could u forget coltrane. Listening to stan getz with out coltrane is horrible man. give the guy a chance to compare the two before u put him the stan getz side. Trane is better btw and plays tenor and in a few cases soprano.
David sanborn on alto u might want to check him out to if u like that contemporary sort of thing.
I wouldn`t reccommend starting off right on soprano tho. thats hands down the hardest sax to master. beginners usually start out of with alto to give them a feel of the horn.

I sugest alto to start with, then when you are good at that you can go play the bari(basically plain fingerings) Then learn how to play tenor (slightly different fingerings) then play the soprano(about the same fingerings as the tenor). Then if you are really into it maybe you can try bass, contrabass, or I can`t put my tounge on it right now but me and my friends call it the mini alto(it looks like an alto with the curved bell but is the size of a soprano, watch the late show with David Letterman, there sax player has one of these. BUt back to what i said before probably start on the alto.

dude..do not put faulty information on this site for the begnniners to read. all saxs have the exact same fingerings. i know i play them all. second u commonly go to tenor after alto than bari than soprano. the contra bass sax is so unbelievably not used in any practical scene of music. it is to monsterouly big to fit in most playing areas.
now btw the little mini alto which is also unpractical is an alto sax made in the key of C.
