there are several ways to do this, the prefered way is with your mouth, tighten and loosen it a little bit, the frequency depends on what sounds right to you. another is with your diaphram, most directors will tell you that this is the perfered method, but in most professional`s and judge`s opinions it sounds like a goat, ie not good. you can use a combination of two. experiment and see what you like.

a few rules of thumb:
1: use vibrato in moderation, it sounds good, but its like chocolate, too much will make you sick
2: dont use vibrato in situations where it would clash with the other players, if there is more than just you playing that part, I wouldnt recomend using it.
3: vibrato is not to be used as a bridge for long sustained notes, thats in fairly bad taste if you do it all the time, and a lot of the time, a good sustained not will be more impressive, as it is harder to do.

what your describing is diaphram vibrato (vibrato as in vibrate, vabrato isnt a word) It doesnt sound too good this way.

the way I reccomend is embrochure vibrato. hold a long note, then close and open your embrochure slightly (usually done with the jaw), it will bend the pitch up and down, do this continuously, there is your vibrato. just play around with it until it sounds right to you. but that is the basic technique
