Hey..whats up....i recently purchased a Yamaha Allegro Alto sax for concert/jazz band and i have run into a little problem. My new sax plays great, cept now i have to use it for marching band...and i really dont want to get it scratched and dinged up. So if any one has any suggestions on a good marching sax...that i might not care as much about getting scratched...it would really be appreciated....thanks...bye

I own a keilwerth sx90 black nickel plated. There`s no WAY i`m marching with that baby. I march with my old student horn. It`s a CONN 24M. It hardly plays as well as the SX90 obviously, but they can take a beating and I don`t care.

I`d say any used student model like the CONN 24M or the Bundy II will get you goin` in marching band. Or if you find a cheap intermediate horn, that`s good too.

Try Ebay!

i use my (even though its new hee hee) Buescher to march with. If you can`t find an used one if your careful it won;t get scrastched up which mostly will not happen in marching band 9i`m never that close to people usually)

O_O u serious man?? what kind of marching band ru in.Bumping into people isn`t wat u should be scared of(i am personally cuz i cuz about 8 tubas and they r always behind me and they have no rythm) u should be worried about when it starts raining in the middle of a football game, or during practice. i dunno about u but my teach practices rain or shine.your pads will be totally f***ed if they get wet. also i constantly have to put my horn down to run laps and do exercises so that doesn`t help.the marching field is a dangerous place for as horn. i would reccomend a nice cheap horn but don`t sacrifice sound for price, if that is a proyamaha then dun take it ask to borrow a horn. if u can`t i would say u should start learning good excuses to why u dun have your horn on the field.*my personal favorite* "Um, my horns in the shop Sir."

Before spending more money an a marching horn, see if your band director has any spare saxes that you could use. I march tenor at my high school, and out of the 10 of us in the section, 7 of us own a tenor, and 4 of us rent from the school. The other three are bari sax and bass clarinet players in concert band and also rent tenors from school.

Otherwise check out classified ads in the paper to see what you can find.

See if you school has saxes for you to march with first. Most schools don`t have altos but may let you march tenor (or even bari if you got the guts/the back to do so). Second...I wouldn`t worry about trying to sound good for marching band, especially if you`re just in high school. Most teachers just matter if you can blend in well with your section and can play loud! That`s why marching bands play outside and concert/jazz bands play on stage. Who really cares how well one horn in a section of 6 sounds tone wise when you probably won`t even be able to hear him/her over a line of 9 or so trumpets? Ain`t gonna happen. (I marched clarinet...believe me I know this...I ended up just playing random runs on some parts when I got bored. and not one person came up to me and said "Great tone on that song!") :-P
