Whenever I try to play the low notes on a tenor sax (from D to B-flat), they don't want to come out. Is there anything that I have to do to "pull out" these low notes, or does it just come with time?

I'm using a Rico reed, I believe, not sure how hard it is. This may have been useful before, but will my bassoon playing affect this? (I'm worried that the answer is going to be an obvious "yes")

try blowing harder.
those notes are sadily easy, so maybe its your horn... or your mouth... or your lungs...
what about your reed?
anyhow... good luck with that one.

When you play lower notes, especially on the lower saxophones, you must lower your jaw. Hopefully when you play your jaw is already lowered to allow the correct use of air. My lessons teacher taught me this: take the mouthpiece off the sax and blow into it like you normally would. Now match the pitch of the mouthpiece to the note you are trying to reach. When the pitch sounds right, put the mouthpiece back on and blow the same way you did to make the right pitch before. The notes should come out easier, matching the pitch with your embouchure will open up the rest of the sax. And always use lots of air.
