Hi there.
I'm very new to the Alto sax (and this site), and I'm already really enjoying my new instrument. I'm determined to teach myself, and so far think I'm doing really well (if I may say so myself!!)
However, I'm struggling with setting the mouthpiece comfortably in my mouth. It's not so much a problem when I'm playing, it's a lot more noticeable after I've finished, as my top teeth have been digging into my top lip the entire time. So I was wondering if I am supposed to be resting my top lip over the teeth while playing? I've also tried resting my actual teeth on the mouthpiece, yet find this uncomfy and worry about damage to my sax.
This really is killing me - my top lip hurts for ages afterwards!!

There are two types of embouchures. The first, double lip, is what you are doing. Double lip isn't very common, but it is out there. If you want to continue this way, by all means. You may be able to find something that relieves the discomfort.

The second type is single lip. This is with the top teeth resting right on the mouthpiece. This is the most common way to play. If you're worried about possible damage, get a mouthpiece patch. These are usually very cheap, and are little stickers that you put on your mouthpiece.

Other than that, sounds like you are improving very well!
