Hey, I've been playing Tenor Sax for seven years, and i'm a senior in a really good jazz band where i play second tenor. I have just recently realized that my embouchure is crap and i dont kno how to fix it. The first tenor told me that on low notes i have to subtone the notes by dropping my jaw, but how do i play on the rest of the notes. Am i supposed to puff my cheeks out when i play? and what type of reed should i use? I have an Ottolink mouthpiece with a med-soft lavoz reed. Any suggestions??? HELP!!!

The best suggestion that I can give you is find a private lesson instructor. Have a few lessons with him/her, and have him/her help you with your embouchure. You are not supposed to puff your cheeks! That is a huge no-no! The reed and mouthpiece combo sounds pretty good. You may want to consider trying a medium, though. I used LaVoz for a while, but I switched to Vandoren my senior year of high school. It might be something for you to consider. They are more expensive, however, Dropping your jaw a little isn't bad, but experiment with tongue positions to see if you can change the outcome of the low notes.
