Hi everyone!! I just came back from the French Horn Forum (it's quite fun to look around in the other forums and see what they talk about)...

Anyway, are there mutes for saxophones?? I haven't seen them, but I think someone would have invented one by now...

Thanks!!

Yes but they are not practical, I used to have one that you could place in the bell, but it would constrict the air so that you were unable to play low C and below. They now have a bag, but that would seem really wierd for me, also unlike brass, the mutes are use to quit the sax not to get special effects. All in all I don't think its practical for a saxophone to have one.

My two cents

Whats the point of a mute?! Saxophone is for showing your sound, not shrouding into silence!

But its an interesting idea......

I was wondering because I have to play a low B, but I have to play it softly. I wasn't thinking of getting a mute, I was just wondering if there was one...

(Gasp!!) That's awesome!! I'm going to make my own lair out of my bed mattress and play my sax all day inside it nad no one can stop me!! jk!! lol!! (Sorry, I'm on a sugar-rush; I just had cereal).

My new question: Could you still put a mute in a soprano sax or would it still have the same effect??

Same thing, the sound comes out the tone holes and would only affect the lowest of notes.

Ever have to play low Bb and in your music it said sfz or pp? It doesnt really have to do w/ mutes, but would it affect a note like that?

That's what I mean!! Why do composers have to do that when you play a low note??!!

Because they like to laugh at us saxophoners in their graves while we mess up horribly. Just went back to the Land of the Dead and talked to him about it. (inside joke)
