The question you have to ask yourself is "are you serious about playing the saxophone"? If you aren't serious about, don't bother spending the money on it, and enjoy it while you play. If you are serious about it, private lessons are a must.
Working with an instructor will help you break bad habits, and reinforce good habits. Many students who don't take lessons, do not understand the importance of key fundamentals, like longtones, chord and scale work, voicing, correct vibrato techniques, correct embouchoure, different techniques for playing various styles, and many others.
There are many other reasons to take lessons but I think the main one, is to have a mentor, someone you can ask questions to about various problems or even to get feedback on your own improvement.
Good Luck whatever you decide.
