So who here plays in a jazz band, using what instrument, and what do you think is the best sax to solo on?
Personally I love soloing on soprano rather than tenor - the high notes really cut through the rhythm section and it sounds fab.

I play tenor in jazz band as well as few other jazz groups. I think teno is the overall best to solo on because of the many different sounds. On soprano you have two schools, kenny-g and sidney bechet. With Alto you have Cannonball and desmond/pepper. For Tenor, every pro sounds completely different, so does every student.

I play in my schools jazz band as well as in a ska band. I usually only play alto, but I guess if I had to say what the best sax to solo on was would be the tenor, it has a cool crisp sound to it. They all have there ups on what is good on solos but I think tenor is the best.

Try playing a solo on bari if you really want a cool sound and a different sound. Make sure you have a nice bari also like one with a low A if you`re in jazz band you`ll need that. However, the tenor is the most popular sax to solo on. I own a soprano, tenor, and alto I would take the tenor over them any day.
