I just bought a Yanagisawa 901 (Alto) and it`s REALLY good, I heared that many people from around (I live in Israel) are moving to Yanagisawa from Selmer.
And about to deciusion of Mark XI r the Yamaha, get the Mark XI! (if you could find one), I`d buy one but I couldn`t find anyone who has it...
P.S.
My Yanagisawa cost 2000$.

Yes, it`s true. I`m a sax player also and some of my favorite players have moved to Yani. Kenny Garret, Greg Osby, etc. I`ve never played a Yani, but I would feel safe buying one. I have a good alternative which I offer at my web site http://www.saxophones.ws
I play EM Winston Super Bell GP.
I have managed to get a Cannonball Aderley sound using a Custom Meyer re-face which I also sell at my web site. I was a bit skeptical at first, but through the past few months, the horn has maintained it`s action and hasn`t fallen apart. Still plays like it did the first day I purchased it. I think that`s one reason a lot of people prefer Selmer, they maintain their action for years and they`re very easy to work on.

Cannonballs run about $2200 for the porfessional series called the "Big Bell". They come with two necks (one silver, one the color of the instrument) and has the option of a jazz or classical mouthpiece to come standard with it. Its only available through dealers though. Dont remember how much of thats ive already said, so excuse the repetition.

i had a soprano cannonball and it sucked, srry. It had lots of low note problems and it was brand new. i returned it and got the same one and i continued to have the problems. The lower register had thius weird low a flat key that bends and it can get out of tune easily. i would reccommend for soprano getting a yanagisawa. They are the number one best selling and stay in tune very well. They are also the same price. i gotthe cannonball that i had for 1800 at Sam Ash.
I hope thgis was a help.

Hello Guys!
I have got two Selmer-saxes(Reference 54 Tenor & alto) myself and I´m a big lover of the specific voice, intonation and sound they have. Especially for jazz this saxophones are the best choice. I just wanna ask if someone of you tried one of this saxes and what do you think about them?

I have an unlacquered Yamaha Custom Z, and I am very pleased with it, i feel that it is the closest replication of the classic Mk VI sound you can get, with all the convieneces of a modern sax.

I have been a hobby trader in used saxophones for a few years and would recommend the following saxes to someone who has that budget. These would be excellent players and be available at $ 1000 or less.
Yamaha YAS-52
Buescher 400 (Made 1968 or earlier)
King Zephyr (Made Late 40`s-Early 50`s)
LA Sax pro model
Don`t worry about the cosmetics. They are all great players.

I play a YTS-62II with a metal otto link mouthpiece, and you get this sound from the combo of the gold and silver, which gives it a very unique sound.

I play primarily jazz, so if that`s what you want to play, i would suggest looking around at pawn shops and local music stores (not big chains) for vintage sax`s. My favorites, as well as most other jazz musicians that i know are those of Conn or Selmer. If you can find a nice 10M(Conn) those are my second favorite sax`s. I play tenor, and im currently playing a 72 year old Conn (m254664) with a Vandoren mouthpiece, and 3.5 reeds (i know, very big for jazz). In my experience, older horns tend to be made much better, and therefor, sound much better. If the finish is off, DON`T GET IT REPLACED!!! All the finish does is make the sax look shiny, and restrics the vibrations causing a metally sound. Make sure you choose a sax that fits your needs and that you like the sound of.

Hey, the points about current Selmers not bieng as good may be valid, but I have yet to find a sax with a better tone than a old 60`s mark 6 selmer. Now those are mean, but cost $3,500+. If you are upgradeing a reallt bad sax to a higher level, I would suggest going all the way; beginner to pro, but if you only have 1000-1500 or so cash, a good realable intermediate sax is an OLDS. Most have high F-sharp, and they play fairly well. It also helps to upgrade your mouthpiece; an ottolink is excellent jazz, but my personal favorite is the selmer c*, which really adds a nice edge to your tone, even an old bundy.

I also primarly use 3 reeds, though for Top tones (Very high G+) Thicker reeds help. Buy 10 at a time, and they will last months if not a year. One thing, which is very important if anyone is still replying to this subject. The player makes the sax, and the sax DOES NOT make the player. I`ve won high seatings in clinincs and concert band with an old Bundy. Of course, once I got the mark-6 I hardly used the bundy except to march. But remember, good sax doesn`t mean good player. Charly Parker would agree. So if your band director tells you to upgrade your horn, and you don`t have the cash, I would say its fine to tell him to .... and so on. Of course the mark-6 isn`t even mine, it`s my directors, but if he hadn`t let me borrow it, I would still be first chair in concert. But then again, I`ve just said not to buy extra saxes when I have four. (sop, alto ,tener c-melody) I would suggest playing the rest of the saxes in your section, ours have all switched around, so I know the different feels to the horns. This also helps you learn to adjust quicker to different saxes, since not many saxes are alike. Well thats the end to my droning, hope it helped.
