The note preceding the name. Either B flat or E flat, is the key of the instument. You might not be familiar with this being a flute player, which is in the common C key. All altos are E flat. AS far as looking for saxaphones, it all depends on money. As you said you were just starting, a student model may be a good choice. However, a personal recommendation would be an antigua widns. They are nice saxaphones, with a good tone, and you can find a very affordable intermediate or entry pro model for only slightly more than a student ould cost you.
