So I'm a high school student, who absolutly loves playing his saxaphone. I play in a few different bands, and am really hoping to become competitive with my playing, unfortunatly lessons are not in the cards. About a year ago I came across a great deal on craigs list, a like new saxaphone for $250, with a LT saxaphone mouthpiece. I bought the saxaphone, it has amazing tone, and used the mouth peice for about 8 months without problem. But, there was a little bit of tape around the base of the mouthpeice. Approximately four months ago the tape started to come off, so I removed a section of it with scissors. It was fine for about a month, but then I noticed a small hissing noise. The hissing has gotten progressively worse, to the point that it's dreadfully noticeable whenever I play a solo, or outside an 15 saxaphone section. I can feel the air coming out of the mouthpiece, but I cannot for the life of me find out where. I've tried putting tape where I thought the tape had been.... it didn't help. I've tried it on two other saxaphones, with different ligatures, and with at least a dozen different reeds, but nothing seems to help. The hissing isn't constant. When I first start playing it's fine, but after about 8 beats it will start, some times it will start immediatly, sometimes not till halfway through a song. I've readjusted my mouth, and it will hold it off, or lesson the sound for a little while. I'm about to give up and just buy a new mouthpiece, but I'm doing this as a last shot. I'd really like to hear any ideas on how to save my mouthpiece, before I spend the money to buy a new one.

Thanks To everyone

S

Well First off I would probly advise you to buy a new mouthpiece anyway because having a broken one will never help you out at all. But If you want you can just play on the mouthpiece by itself and see what you get. But I would eather buy a new one or take it into a shop to see whats up.

If you choose to get a new mouthpiece(and you should) get something that will last awhile like a soloist mouthpiece by selmer. Make sure to get a selmer though they are the best as far as quality.
