I play the soprano, alto, tenor and bari saxes. I`m 16 and have been playing for 7 years. My main instrument is the Alto Sax; I have a Selmer Series III Pro Sax. I already have done numerous sax exams studying classical however I want to broaden my range to jazz and other styles. I currently have a Selmer C* mouthpiece which is good to an extent, however it wont let me obtain a clearer crisper sound like a Meyer or a metal mouthpiece. I want to know what mouthpiece / brand / type of mouthpiece I would need to obtain a clear, crisp tone that the saxophone is so famous for. For example Kenny G, has a clear, strong tone that I’m looking for. What are my options? I have the horn, but not the mouthpiece. Which should I get? Metal, Hard Rubber, Plastic.
Thanks

I HAVE A SELMER REF 36 AND YANI 9930 SOPRANO AND I SPLURGED AND BOUGHT A OTTOLINK HR AND METAL DOC TENNEY PREPPED MPC FOR EACH AND THEY ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD. YOU WILL PAY EXTRA FOR THE TENNEY PERFECTING BUT I WAS NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE MONEY IT WAS A INVESTMENT TO ME. SAXQUEST OFFERS SEVERAL DIFFERENT DOC TENNEY PERFECTED MPC`S.

I`d say go for the Doc Tenney Otto Link. If you prefer not to pay the extra $200 or so for the tenney then regular otto`s are still great!

Well, a selmer C* is not in any way intended to give out a crisp sound. It is meant for dark ominous kind of sound.and please do not disgrace the line of saxophone`s by trying to get a Kenny G. sound. For one reason, he has been, since the beggining of his career, been unbelievably sharp. Which does not help his already girlish tone. For that crisp jazz sound for alto, go with a dukoff D8 i use that and it is pretty much as bright and crisp as u can get without getting a custom mouthpiece or acrylic(super hard clear plastic) Dukoff also has those too. Adn if you want crisp listen to David Sanborn, hes the only smooth jazz sax i respect beside grover washington.
