Hi. I am a new player to the Tenor Sax. I play piano already and am trying to teach myself. I can get the notes pretty well at the moment, but when I try to tounge (I`m not sure if you CAN tounge on a sax?) I have trouble. If I slur the notes and play them in one breath then it sounds really smooth.. as soon as a try and play a note detatched, I find that it sounds really fluffy and the note doesn`t respond quickly.. especially on the long notes. I am thinking this is something to do with the air passing through the instrument... is there anything I should be doing or could do?
Thanks for any advice.

I suggest using the tip of you tongue against the tip of the reed. This won`t work for everyone but it works well for me. Slowly get used to keeping a good air stream and adding the tip of your tongue, you`ll know your getting a clean articulation when you don`t hear any "thhh" or "pthh" sounds before the note sounds this allows for a great range of articulation from legato to accent...hope this helps
