hey all,
I`ve decided to pick up my old sax and start playing again. I played all through junior high and a couple of years in high school. Went to state on alto and bari sax in high school also. I`m gonna put my sax in the shop since one of my younger siblings got hold of it at some point and trashed one of my keys. Question is, I still know how to read music but am thinking of MAYBE taking up lessons from someone. Although I`m pretty sure that it will all come back to me with practice.
I`m a bit scared that if I don`t take up lessons from someone there may be many things that I`ve forgotten through the years. But would hate to waste money on something that I don`t really need.
What do you`ll think ??
Tim

G`day Tim
Lessons might make it a bit easier and quicker, but have a go by yourself first. I taught myself forty years ago (@ 18 yrs) when I was out bush in the middle of nowhere (Oz). It will be easier for you I reckon! Get into it mate!

I mean, i`m practicing cuz i want to march next year when i start college, maybe they`ll give me some money for that?

Tim,
I took a couple decades off myself but played occasionally. The biggest issues I had was my embouchure, reeds (start out 1 full size smaller -eg, used to play 3.5-4, but started with 2.5 & 3).
Practice your long tones w/a tuner. Also air support was an issue. Tonguing was also sluggish as were my fingers.
You just have to be aware of all these and work on each of them.
I can still play w/o thinking of the fingerings so that wasn`t a problem.
Just practice, practice, practice.
