they`re similar, meaning you`ll have to practice for a few days to get the fingerings down. i play sax, and it was harder for me to figure out how to play oboe because oboe fingerings are slightly different. but other than that, most woodwind fingerings are similar...(except bassoon)

NO! don`t do it (lol)... I started with tenor, and when you regress back to your oboe, it is so hard to do after the marching season because of how drastically different they play... clarinet might be better, or if you`re up to the challenge, flute is AWESOME! (i play all four, and flute is so much more fun )

obvisouly that person is crazy. tenor and oboe are an easy transition-well...along with you just have to be some what good and not suck. It`s not like overly hard, it`s pretty basic-it will take u bout a week to really fell comfortable with the fingerings, the hands, the weight, etc... so go for it tenor is the best marching inst to play...peace

The fingerings are similar but the breathing is COMPLETLY different. Also, you`ll have to get used to taking care of, an dusing your reed to its full extent.
I would suggest you read this on how to take care of your reed:
http://www.geocities.com/sax411/sax/accesories/reeds.html
Also, if your a little bit short (vertically challenged), the tenor saxophone may be a bit hard size wise.
