If your son is starting on the sax i would get the alto because it is smaller and you could work tour way up to tenor if he wants. But before you buy it you should rent it to see how he likes it.

Yeah, definitely rent first. then like 6 months or so down the road if he`s really liking it, look into buying one. It`s definitely an investment. And I`d say start on alto too. It`s small enough for him to carry around and play easy enough. Then move up to tenor. The only need he`ll have for soprano is if he just wants to play it for fun, or if he gets in to some top bands that require it (jazz band in school, state band, etc....but I`m sure that`s a few years away, right? lol).
As far as brands, you probably won`t have much choice if you end up renting it from a music store. Most stores will give you a Bundy or a Yamaha...in their student models. These are okay horns to start out on. If you want to buy one and don`t mind spending the money, go for the Selmers or Yanigasawas (I also like Keilwerth but it seems there are some varying opinions about it on this site )
Ok, good luck

Most people start on alto. After you learn basics it`s not hard to switch to a different sax.
As far as brands, I enjoy Selmer, but it`s an opinion. I would suggest renting first. When you decied to buy, you should take your child to a music store and ask to try some out. Look for one that he is comfortable holding and has a warm, full sound when played.
Also you could take him to a music store and ask to try a trumpet and a sax. It doesn`t matter if he knows what he`s doing, just let him try them out and see which he prefers. If he chooses one and after a while decieds it`s not for him, you can always take the sax back to the store you are renting from and exchange it for the other, maybe he`ll like it better.
Good Luck!
