hi i know all saxaphones have the same fingerings but i come from the oboe so i am used to instruments on a high octave i really want to go into Barri sax beacause it seems like an interesting instrument to me & im willing to learn the bass clef but do you think i should go into something higher also just for the hell of it which do you think is best?

Don`t forget the soprano, also in Bflat.

The soprano is a little longer than your oboe (if i recall correctly).

All saxes are treble clef.

You may feel more comfortable with a soprano or alto. The heft of a Barisax from an oboe is quite different. Just think of the size of the case.

I think you should go bari sax...but that`s just `cause I`m a bari sax player too and I have a hell of a lot of fun playing it. And yeah, most all of bari sax music is in treble. However, you may find a few old marches or really old songs that have it in bass clef. However, all you need to do is transpose the key and the accidentals correctly and just read it as if you were reading treble clef, and it can come out fine (old trick in reading bass clef for Eb horns). Example: An F on the fourth line in bass clef will play just like D on the treble clef line. Crazy huh? It`s a good way if you play with a band who doesn`t have a bari sax sheet for that song and you just grab the bass trombone sheet. Keep swingin`

The bari is quite nice, just keep in mind the size (that`s my only problem but I`m short anyways).

It all depends upon the tone and sound you are looking for.

I also take trombone music, add 3 sharps (so if the music has 2 you would end up with just a F# as the key).

i play alto and bari and personally i like alto better but hey, bari is still cool. my only problem with bari is that the one i play on is a school horn and its really old and crappy but what the heck...

Yeah, bass clarinet is in treble clef as well. I think sometimes I`ve even seen it in tenor clef for a part of a song (who knows why the composer wrote it like that...to make me mad I think). What`s even stranger is the Contra-bass clarinet is ALSO in treble clef and it`s even LOWER than bass clarinet.

the tenor has a nice sound but when I go to my friends house to practice he says it is loud and obnoxious and im not sure if it is because he plays the clarinet and is not used to a loud instrument, or its because he knows im much better than him and he`s jealous. and i hope he see`s this. oh yeah, i want to play the tenor, but i was offered to play the barisax. the bari sax sounds really good but I like all saxophones. which should I play ? help

The player makes the horn. I can sound better on a student horn than students on Selmer Refs ..... it`s all about the player.

So, try out an alto, tenor and bari. bring some family & friends along to hear. See what they think. Just figure out what you want to do.

or get all 3

Play what feels most comfortable. If you continue, you will- probably- end up playing all of them at some time.

if you`re in school, be warned that playing bari is condemning yourself to a ton of crappy parts. My teacher wanted me to switch to bari in 9th grade. Now, i`m in eleventh and only get to play alto at home. Believe me, being the pa in oom-pa along with the tuba can get kind of boring after a while. I thought it would get better this year when i made the better band of my school but it didn`t. Jazz band isn`t much better but at least i get to solo sometimes. I`ll have to admit that it`s hard to beat a good bari solo. The low pitch really adds to it. If you know what you`re doing, you`ll have a lot of fun playing bari in jazz band if you`re willing to put up with bad parts during regualr band.

Just don`t play soprano, nobody takes them seriously as an instrument, and for good reason: they suck. I`ve played on alto, tenor, and soprano, and the soprano feels like a toy compared to a good alto or tenor. And none of them were cheap instruments, I have a Yani991, which retails for over 3 grand, and the soprano and tenor were both MarkVIs, which are obviously classic instruments. Spare yourself and stick to a tenor, bari, or alto.

I just switch to tenor month ago. But I have study the sax family for many years...Belive me changes from double reed to single reed instruments not a very easy job !! I propose u to have a start on the alto sax first as the alto is most easier to catch up ..then from the alto u can slowly switch to tenor ,baritone or even soprano....To play tenor the major thing u have to take care when u playing tenor is to play with a wide open throut, which consume a lot of air, when out of control it become very noicy...but the advantage of tenor sound is the deep n sexy tone ....This going more when u r playing baritone sax.....I see some one complaining as the baritone is a boiring instruments, I`m strongly not agree with it ...it all depends on the song that the player chose for normal band music in overture, march or classical may be boiring a bit but I give the bass sound a solid `bullet head` where the bass using buzzing hard to create a hard solid tone that very needed to give an impact on the begining (the head os sound). But this all become diffrent story if u choose to play in sax ensemble especially jazz ensemble...that is not much diffrent to play baritone as a melody or rhytm baritone can running fast n just the sound more lower n of course much sexier n cool ....
