One thing that we have yet to consider is -: What is your budget? Barritone or bass sax is VERY expensive as compared to alto and tenor, the price jump is the biggest in the range of horns - alto usually being the best sax to start out on mainly because of the size, ease of fingering and the cost, as someone pointed out earlier quite rightly, you don`t want to spend alot of money and then find out it isnt for you - the upside of course is that you can always start at the bottom budget-wise and then progress to the classier horns (also the more expensive ones! lol) that way, you know whether you want to take up the commitment and not regret the huge investment it involves!

personally, i think the tenor is best becuase that's what i play. but just to let you know...music for tenor (and bari) is harder to get and often times, the songs aren't as fun. but with tenor, you can read clarinet, bass clarinet, and trumpet parts. and then with bari you can read alto parts. i have a friend that plays bari that really likes it, but says that sometimes he wished that he had chosen alto. also, i have a friend that used to play oboe and switched to tenor and it was a fairly easy transition for her. in fact, she's still able to play oboe. sometimes for band class, she has to play oboe and sometimes tenor and she can alternate very easily.

"Just don`t play soprano, nobody takes them seriously as an instrument, and for good reason: they suck. I`ve played on alto, tenor, and soprano, and the soprano feels like a toy compared to a good alto or tenor"

O.k is this a serious post? I mean, come on.

Vincent, you need to be playing with that same "wide open throat at all times". Now that you have figured this out, apply it to alto, soprano etc... and your sound will improve ten fold.
