Can I just ask all you out there making all kind kinds of silly comments about disliking Kenny G etc what any of you have produced so far. It`s only empty barrels who make the most noise.I bet most of you criticising kenny are all struggling or failed musicians who dont have a clue how to take your music to the next level. And who decides what style of music any musician is permitted to have. You go ahead and create your own style and let everyone else assess and make comments about it.Then we`ll know you`ve also made a name for yourselves whenevryone is talking about you.Till then just shut your beaks. You will only be qualified to make any kind of comments about any body`s music if you can produce something worth listening to.
Now to create the kenny G sound,I dont really believe in attemting to imitate somebody else`s tone.
For starters get yourself a good soprano sax.then get a good metal mouthpiece.I use a metal otto link 6* and I practice hard and long just working on my tone. It`s all about how well developed your lip mucles and cells are to produce that sweet tone you`re looking for.I must warn you,you will feel severe lip pains after each practice session as your embouchure develops daily. But after a while you will be noticed for the smooth and bright tone you produce.I give credit to Chalie parker and the jazz greats of that time but we`re in a different day and age today.People are just finding it difficult to accept the changes in the world and the music scene today and it is reflecting in the negative comments being passed about Kenny G.Well for me,I regard Kenny G as the man that introduced me to the soprano sax.It was a time in my life when I was going through troubled times.I found listening to tunes like Uncle Al and Silhoutte uplifting.I fell in love with the saxophone cos of how Kenny plays it and I had to play the sax at all costs.I`m taliking about the sweet melodic lines he plays.Nevertheless i have been a bit disappointed as the years went by as his subsequent albums sound about the same. But he`s great and he has sold more records than than any other instrumentalist so far.If that`s what people are jealous about then go BURN THE SEA.

That last post was freaking hilarious. Charlie Parker and the "jazz greats of that time?" Does this mean that Kenny G is considered a jazz great of our time? Kenny G`s records belong in a trash bin, not the jazz section of a record store.
Changes in the music scene? I guess Kenny G just isn`t appreciated for the revolutionary ideas he brings to jazz and improvisation. Who would have thought that penatonic scales and arrangments of Christmas carols were the future of jazz?
In fact, I guess I`ve been wrong to criticize Kenny all these years (me not being a million dollar smooth jazz recording artist and all). His bright and often out of tune soprano tone is just too enticing for the ears. And his fresh new harmonic approach to improvisation is far too advanced for my intellect. If only I had ignored Dave Liebman`s horrible soprano playing, and that hack Wayne Shorter, and worst of all John Coltrane. Those guys weren`t even fit to curl Kenny G`s hair before a gig.

I find it hard to believe that any saxophone players out there rate Kenny Gorelick. I can just about believe a couple of saxophone owners liking it, but come on guys. His intonation is persistently out, his ‘improvisation’ is inane drivel that even a 4 year old could manage just by waggling their fingers and he has one of the worst hair cuts in the business. I admit he is very good at pulling out the crowd pleasing licks,, but that is all they are, licks. There is nothing creative about his playing. His sound makes me cringe.
Some of you may ask what qualifies me to make comments about someone who has had such commercial success. If you don’t like listening to me say it then maybe Pat Metheny will do the job. For those of you who don’t know of Metheny, first where have you been for the last 25 odd years, and second he’s arguably one of the best guitarists around, in both the jazz and fusion arenas. Check out this link to see what he thinks of Mr Gorelick.

Hope that clears things up for a few people. Those of you that have never experienced any sax playing other than Kenny G please go and listen to some other stuff to get a better representation of our art.

soo i play trumpet, jazz particularly... ive heard kenny g`s work on "what a wonderful world" with louie armstrong and i would have to say, i think its awful.. all of the jazz licks and pentatonic movements in the song that he "creates" are so cheezy, and anyone who has heard the song should no what i am talking about. to settle this, he is verry unoriginal.. and that i know many people from my highschool that are better than him, better meaning that they can create original solos ans such. thanks.

I just read this article by Pat Metheny. It should clear up this entire controversy of Kenny G sucking or not. Personally, I think he sucks big time. Let Pat metheny clear it up- cuz if there is anyone who knows anything about jazz, its Pat.

I`ve the duet with Armstrong.... Really that`s not his best piece... My favorite is either Summertime, or Romantic Saxophone... have somebody come up with that why don`t you.
