Quit playing for a month or two, then pick it up again and see how you sound while kicking a cat.

kenny g. stole jazz and messed it up from all the black people that know how to play it, since jazz originated from new orleans and was first played by great black jazz musicians, I am not black but I am a white male.
KENNY G. MESSED JAZZ UP BIG TIME.
i rest my case

Lets face it, kenny g is making money, but he`s not making music. My saxophone teacher stresses the importance of sound. I can`t list all of the things it takes to make a nice sound, but if you really want to get a nice sound get a private instructor. Look around for one that`s experienced at what they play. My teacher has been all over the states and teaching in universities. Another thing you can do is listen to other saxophone players. Ok about a horn. A pro saxophone is good, but a student pro model works just as well. My teacher recomends a selmer series II. Another thing of which horn to play, alto is the main choice. The horn I use is the YTS 52. I bought it used and it was manufactured when they first started making 52`s, so it`s old, but still plays great! It gives me a great sound and it plays easy for me. I also play it with a selmer S90 for my classical work and a Otto Link 7* for my jazz. I`ve played on other tenors, but my yamaha gave me the sound I wanted. I am curently looking around for a Yamaha custom alto to update my ancient student model. Each horn will play differently for you, you just have to pick the one you like the best. Also with a private instructor, they can help you answer questions like this one. Sorry if anyone thinks I`m wrong in what I said or if they have a question for me I`ll be more then happy to answer it.

Dude, your asking to fight with someone, for all you know, lives in another country. lol... ?
why does everyone call it the Kenny G tone? hell, its just a way to make your sax sound. I mean with synthesisers. yea, he sounds good, but so can anybody. I can. It`s just your tone. Make it sound like you like. Equipment...? nah. a decent sax is all you need. i`m pretty sure Kenny G. doesn`t always sound that way when he plays. Not trying to offend though. Just taken it cool.

ok, I know a lot of jazz guys put down on Kenny G often and I think Its mainy because his music is so simple. I agree with that but no one can match his tone and control.

I`ve been hearing a lotta people talk nonsense, but... here`s how u make a kenny g sound on an alto sax.
the easiest to start off is middle E and then it`s middle A, then Mid B, High C, then Mid G, then High D.
here`s what u need:
1. i have a cheap alto sax, so whatever u have doesnt matter.
2. cheap mouthpiece, urs is probably better
3. 3.0 RICO REED (3.0 and 3.5 are easiest), 2.5 is very very hard.
4. Yes, like Kenny G, play from the right side of your mouth.
5. Once u get the hang of it, switch to middle
6. since you are using the right, put strength on right side of the right lip.
7. Try starting out with a Ffff sound instead of a T sound.
8. Blow HARD for A and above notes
9. Blow Easy on high D and above
10. It should NOT be that hard.
Tips: the sound should be more solid but also more soft than normal sound.
try to feel the hallowness when u play notes.
once again, start on middle E, it`s a easiest!
HOPE IT HELPS

what people said before such as getting the belmer or whatever kind of soprano might help a bit (mentally...), but it`s not that hard if u follow the procedures of the previeous post.
ONCE AGAIN 3.0 REED IS THE BEST, then it`s 3.5 REED, DO NOT USE 2.5, IT WILL RUIN YOUR CHEEK MUSCLE, 3+ STRENGTHENS THE MUSCLE SO IT`S EASIER TO PLAY SOLID SOUNDS

Kenny G also uses a practice called Circular Breathing...it can be learned but it is difficult. Basicly what you do is breath in through your nose while blowing into the horn. Kenny holds a world record for holding an `A` note on his sax for 45 minutes. The only reason he stopped was "a)I was bored and b) there was so much saliva acumulated in the instrument it couldn`t make the sound anymore"

to sound like kenny g:
1. grow your hair out and then curl it. although this has no effect on the actual sound of a saxophone, you will never sound 100% like kenny g unless you become kenny g
2. pick out your favorite lame ass christmas carol arrangment to play.
3. get a couple buddies that are equally untalented and stupid looking to play synthesizer and rain-stick.
now for the hard part- that famous kenny g sound:
4. play with the worst embouchure you can possibly make.
maybe even experiment with turning the mouthpiece upside down, or playing without the mouthpiece even on the horn.
5. bad intonation, virbrato, and musicality are a must. make sure that your improvisation makes no compositional sense whatsoever.
6. finally, never play with or near other jazz musicians that are somewhat talented or accomplished. this way you can fool non-musicians into thinking that you are actually talented and accomplished.
hope this helps

hunter,
grow up. kenny g is a bad musician.
yes, he makes ridiculous amounts of money, but most musicians don`t play music to make money so who cares.
and no, i`m not jealous that he plays and composes crappy music. because no serious muscian will ever seriously listen to it.
