kenny is good musician. Like the person said before, he holds a world record for circular breathing.

As you can see, this topic is titled "how to produce a kenny g sound?", and since it is a question, it requires answers. If you do not have an answer, stop arguing whether or not kenny g`s good or bad. I dont care if you think he`s bad, but this post starter thinks he`s good and wants to play like he does and have his sound, and I`m helping him out. and if you guys don`t like kenny g, then start a topic for kenny g haters, i won`t even give crap.

you are not helping out anyone. He needs help on how to make a kenny g sound, not how to find the bad points about kenny g. of course a computer can hold a note for 45 minutes, air does not flow like electricity. Geez, all the hostility. The point I was making about circular breathing is that technical feats (such as circular breathing, double tonguing, etc.) are just that- technical feats. They don`t distinguish good musicians from bad musicians.

Secondly, I don`t see why a classical saxophone player would want to sound like Kenny G, simply because Kenny G isn`t a classical saxophonist. I also don`t see why a jazz saxophone player would want to sound like Kenny G because he isn`t a jazz saxophonist either.

With regards to the original post, I don`t see why anyone would want to sound like Kenny G. Your sound wont blend in a wind ensemble or chamber group and you`ll get laughed off the bandstand on a jazz gig. And if you want to play smooth jazz you should try to be original because one Kenny G already exists, and there probably isn`t much market for a second.

That was a point that I was going to bring up. Kenny G. does not play Jazz. Or classical music. It`s a genre of it`s own. Now you can call it crap, or love it, or not give a hell about it, but it`s... new. what is it? *shrug* It won`t mix with school band, but if your playing gigs and the crowd likes it... Of course, Kenny G. doesn`t always have to sound like he does. It`s called, "Hey kenny, its (insert record company) we would like to put out a cd... (insert random deal) we will pay you (insert random large sum of $$$)"
So... what should we call this "new style"? Money making? *shrug* just a thought.

I guess all emotions run high because jazz lovers want to make their point that Kenny G is not a Jazz musician.

I guess all of us Kenny G fans already know that.

He plays easy listening, instrumental pop, commercial stuff, whatever you want to call it.

And that stuff has a strong market as Kenny G`s sales clearly indicate.

The only thing I want to add here is that it is not easy to write a good melody.

Most of the good melodies are deceptively simple. Take the Beatles for instance; they took the world by storm and most of their international hits are such simple melodies that literally children could play them.

Kenny G has been so phenomenally successful because of his heart-warming melodies. Most of the people don`t know about or don`t give two hoots about how technically good a musican is. All they want are good melodies. And Kenny G gave them those melodies and brought sax music to such people`s homes who did not even know what a saxophone looked like or couldn`t tell Kenny G`s soprano sax from the clarinet or the oboe for that matter.

My point: writng heart-warming, romantic, tuneful ballads is not an easy job. I think it is THE most difficult thing to do.

Okay, KG is different. I don`t like him. When he plays he reminds me of an Eb clarinet. A saxophone should sound like a saxophone. What KG is for is some dorky dude uses a s backround music for funny buisness, if you know what I mean.

if you want to produce a certian sound, dont go out speending hundreds on new equptment, all you need to to is listning and practice, and more listing. fancy equiptment may help a little but you have to find what works for you, every horn, mouthpiece, reed, and especialy player is diffrent. just go out and listin all you can, and with practice you will achive your goal.
