i am first chair clarinet in concert band, so me being me i wanted a challenge so i took up tenor sax and joined jazz band. today was the first rehersal, and me only playing it for a week couldn`t do much of the music.
i can play the tenor really well, i just have never been in jazz band before, and the people in it 9well one in particualr) really doesn`t think i can do it.
should i stay and keep trying at it, or drop it and try again next year? i would really want to stay, its just i`m not sure i can do it.
thanks

You just need to practice, jazz is totaly different then concert. I had troubles when jazz band first started for me. I started as first chair, becuase I practiced the tryout material for hours, but when we first started playing I was the worst player of them all. I just kept practicing and now, not to sound conceded, I am the best of all of them. Just keep practicing and you will do just fine, jazz is just a totaly different beast, all the swinging and accenting, it is really hard at first.

don`t worry i`m sure u can do it! i had never played the bari b4, but i played it in jazz last yr. i caught on fast. Tenor sax is notorious for jazz tho and u`ll have many solos and jazzy, latin, and swing pieces to come. good luck!

Keep with it. If you play the clarinet, you will be able to pick up the sax quickly. Practice, practice, practice.
