definitely test play them, contrary to popular belief, just because its a Mark VI doenst mean its a great sax. they were all good, but a series 3 will outshine a fair amount of them.

Well the mark IV saxophones are very inconsistent. Although the mark IV is a better sax then the series 3 u should really try out both saxes. the selmer saxes (series 3) have a darker sound for classical music. u said that u want a jazzier sound so i would deffinitly go with a Mark IV. As i said before the amrk Iv are very inconsistent because they were made by hand. But if u try out at least five u will see a difference. So if u go with the mark IV be sure to try at least five to make sure wih one best suites u.

YOU ALL LEFT OUT THE BEST SOUND FOUND TODAY. I HAVE PLAYED SINCE 1971 AND TRIED A LOT OF HORNS. THE NEW REF 36 TENOR IS A AWESOME HORN. COMBINES THE SERIES 3 TECHNOLOGY WITH THE MARK6 SPECS. AS ALL HAS STATED YOU CAN FIND A DOG IN EVERY MAKE AND MODEL. TODAYS CNC MAKES THE TOLERANCES OF THE HORNS UNCOMPARABLE TO THE VINTAGE HORNS. THE REF 36 IS GREAT TRY ONE BEFOE YOU SET YOUR MARK ON A SERIES 3 OR MARK 6.

Well, the mark VI is very very nice, but also rare and expensive. I found that the keilwerth sx models play very well too. But then all saxes are different, and you would have to play one to really find out. Some are better than others.

I`ve owned a 1964 Selmer MKIV Alto and a 1967 Mark IV Tenor since those dates. I`ve never played anthing else and have tried the Super 80`s, Type II`s and III`s and find them lacking in fullness and tonal quality. If you are looking to play Soft Jazz (?) Modern Contemporary or Rock flavored Pop, then the MKIV is not for you. The new horns are designed to get that "edgey but mellow sound" that now rules the world. The sound of a IV is like no other. If you ever get to play an early series (pre 70`s) you`ll see why. Also, they ain`t cheap. My alto sold for $300.00 (which was a fortune in `65) and has been appraised at $5000.00 today. My tenor sold for $600.00 in `67 and has been appraised at $8500.00 today. These are horns that you love for the rest of your life. Ain`t nitting like a IV.

What about a Yamaha Pro Custom YTS-875? I have a black one and it is better than the Mk. VI I used to play. I`ll never forget the first time I used it. All I had to do was breathe into the thing to get a beautiful tone. Effortless.

Most of the advise I have read so far is ver good. I`m a Mark VI owner since 1964. There is a warmth to the sound that I just cant get with any other horn. There are a few SAXOPHONE shops around that are very good. If you are in the Metro area there is one in Kenilworth, NJ called USA HORN. You can call 1-800-usahorn or log on to www.usahorn.com and check out their stock. There you can try new and vintage horns and make a dicision for your self. Good Luck!

If you buy a selmer series iii you have a better chance of getting a better horn because mpst mark 6`s are defective, well kind of. Ok, there are things that need to be straightend put here. people say that the selmer 6;s produce a better sound just because, that is not true. The pro saxes do not cost more because of there engravings, they cost more because they stay in tune better. That is the main thing with pro instruments. I would chose the selmer series III because they are newer, easyer altissamo, and the instrument you get no matter what will be wonderful.

MkVI the best    18:07 on Friday, November 12, 2004

Really, the MkVI is the one. I play it because it has an attitude that no other saxophone I`ve tried can match. Newer ones may be more consistent, easier to play, but there is just a sort of magic to the MkVI. Sort of like a stradivarius Violen. Of course, it isn`t for everyone.

guys, I live in Oregon and dont know anything about this company, but look at this restored mkIV in silver plating! I want it so bad but cannot afford it. It looks like a Selmer Lamborguini to me! Yikes! Its a 1959 and they want 5,899.00. It looks brand new. www.worldwidesax.com Its their feature restoration of the week. It comes up on the homepage.
