Hello. I want to get an begginer alto sax. I have played the piano for years and have a natural ability with music so I don`t think playing with be a problem. Anyways, I was looking at the yamaha yas23-$950 and the selmer as500 aristocrat-$900. I have read and heard alot of good things about the yamaha 23 being a great instrument but I`ve also heard that selmer has a good rep. I am sort of leaning to the yamaha, but if anyone has any input on this topic or recommendations I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

If they are used it depends on which is in the best condition. However, as new, the yas23 is an excellent sax and should take you to a relatively high level.

Getting people`s advice is always a good thing, but the MOST important thing is that you play both of them and choose the one you like best. Since you haven`t played for long, i would suggest renting a sax to learn the basics on. Sure you may be COOL if you have an expensive Selmer, but if u can`t play it, it just ends up putting a huge dent in your wallet and distracting you from what`s really important at your stage; learning the basics.
