Hello bari sax players. Is there any trick to squeezing those lower G`s and D`s out fast enough? Whenever I try to do it fast while playing with my ban(I just started bari, used to play alto)and I get a higher note out. I know how to get them to come out it just takes to long to adjust my mouth. Anyone care to help?

Hey~! I used to play alto and switched to bari also. I have trouble switching to the low notes like you 2! I adjust my mouth and try to open my mouth wider to blow warm air and kinda tighten your stomach. I kinda just switched this year so I don`t know much and you are probably going for the ones way down low like under the measure kind of stuff and me I can hardly play a D and a C right below it so...and also I find that since I wear a retainer its easier to get the low notes without it on. Your reed may also not be wet enough instead of just having it in your mouth to wetten it try running it under cold water. I got a new mouthpiece that is longer that helps too! I know I am confusing you with all this info and its way too much so Ill quit! bye bye

I just switched this year also. I also have a longer mouth piece(The good ole 125.00$$ selmer C) My bari is like 20 years old. Just had tp replace one of the palm keys. Anyways, Im just talking bout low gs and d`s its actually easier for me to play the low C then the D. I havent learned the low B yet. My teacher has neglected to teach me. My finger barely reaches the keys. lol. Anyway thanks for the reply and your very very right about the openingmouth thing. It really helps but still takes a sec to get it out. Its so much easier playing alto eh?

Hey again! Yeah...alto sax is soo much easier...but bari does have its good things. I found my mouth feeling less tight and stiff after switching, but anyways. I switched back to alto for concert and play bari during the marching season and it is so much better during concert season. All the bari parts are so easy...there is no melody and its alwayz tha same as the tuba part which means BORING! well atleast to me. I have no more suggestions for you with hitting those low notes, I should have saved some of those advices for later notices but it doesn`t matter now. Do you have ne good sites to find free music sheets..i would rather have alto than bari but both are good. thanx for replyin and sorry I couldn`t help much!

I looked for sheet music before but no luck. I just gave up. Anyways, I play alto for regular band and I play Bari for Jazz band. All of myparts are solo parts so they are equivalent to alto mostly. I love bari and its fat tone . The fat tone is the coolest and especially cuz Lisa from the simpsons plays it .

To get the lower notes I just kind of curve my tounge towards the reed. I know it sounds stupid, but it works for me!

Ok, Well, I`m a Tenor player, but earlier in my playing career I had trouble getting those low notes also. Honestly it`s kinda hard to explain, when you put more of your mouthpiece in your mouth, your tone worsens, and like you said you wanted it to be quick. The best thing for you is practice, maybe you`ve heard brass players do something called intervals? Well a similar things helped when I wanted to get low notes. Play notes like this:
C(low) - G - C - G -C(high) - G - C - G - c (low)
then take all the notes down a step:
(low)B - F - B - F - B(high) - F - B - F -B (low)
If you can`t reach someone of thet higher notes don`t worry about, right now you`re trying to get the low ones, if you can`t get down to the C, start at the D/A pattern. Do these while sluring, if you`re unable tongue them. Either way do these once a week for 5 min, and you`ll easily get them down, or if your band director gives you some time to warm up on your own, these will surely help. -Moogle

neva thought of that...maybe i just don`t have enuf mouth piece when my teacher says to put more in...ah well...it works for me neway. And yes, PRACTISE is probably the most important part!

I never really had problems with lower notes. It could be the instrument.

I switched form alto CLARINET to barisax 2 months ago... basically reaching the low notes is more or less like singing... just open your throat really wide and use a large amount of warm air. Which is air moving at low speed. Hold lots of long notes! Hope this is helpful..

More air really is the key. Try moving your teeth further down on the mouthpiece.

So I think we have unianimous vote that moving your mouth farther down the mouthpiece works? hehe, only thing wrong with that, that I see, is that when you do that you lose your tone worsens for medium ranged notes, so it can be sometimes hard to adjust your mouth when playing a medium to low melody. the warm air is a good suggestion
