moogle...
u play a tenor sax. Bari is different, maybe 4 u the tone worsens, but 4 baritone the whole idea is to get as low as we possibly can. 2 do that the reed needs 2 viabrate heaps, so u need more mouth peice so it can viabrate...therefore...more mouth piece = more reed = more viabration = lower notes...

I never said it doesn`t help, just said worsens the tone, and I play tenor true, but it`s not like I never played the bari, sheesh. :-P. Oh well, I admit it helps, but I still say just practice going from low notes to medium-low notes will get you the best of both worlds but oh well -Moogle

I don`t usually read through forums so I`m just giving you my sugestion even if someone else said the same thing.
When i first switched to bari sax, i had the same problem. My first year i was lucky that we didnt have any fast music but during the second year it was all quick notes. after that i learned how to play them faster and generally play my low noter beter.
I don`t want you to think i know exactly how it should work, i am still a student in band. This is just how it worked for me.
What i had to do was put more of the mouth piece into my mouth and loosen up on it. The loosening is obvious since it always helps go low, but i had always been used to the small alto mouth piece.
I hope this helps you out a bit.
Peace out.

I`m assuming your talking about middle G, 2nd line on the treble cleff, fingering 1,2,3? How could your book not teach you how to play that note? Its the tuning note for concert B flat. Unless your talking about the extremely low G, which bari`s dont have, low G being 2 ledger lines and one space below the treble staff. I think thats what note you mean, because middle G is in a lot of music, and I`ve never seen any bari. part written with the "low G", which i am refering to as 2 lines and 1 space below the treble cleff staff.

I`ve played a low G on a bari, believe it or not. You have to use a combination of lowering the pitch with your embouchure and covering up part of the bell with something (there is a certain creative aspect to this portion). Each technique by itself will effectively lower the pitch by a semitone. It`s not very useful, I`ll admit, but I have done it.
