Hey guys, my director showed me once but I forgot how to transpose piano music to alto saxophone. If you could refresh my memory it would be much appreciated.

Let`s talk about transposing bass clef music into alto sax music first. First take the key the music is in, and change it to the corresponding key in Eb saxophone by going down a minor third or up a major sixth. For instance, C major (piano) would be A major (saxophone), and Eb major (piano) would be C major saxophone. (you can also do this by adding 3 sharps or deleting 3 flats or a conbination of the two). After it`s in the correct key, read the bass clef music as if it`s treble clef. For instance if you see a note on the middle (third) line of the bass clef, then it is a concert D, but saxophone B, just like it`s treble clef. You don`t even have to know how to read bass clef.

Now changing from treble clef piano music is a little complicated. You start out the same, change it to the right key. Then, when you read the music, bring the notes you see down to the next line if it`s on a line or space if it`s on a space. For instance, when you see an D (forth line) written for piano, bring it down to the next line (third line), and you get a B for saxophone, and that`s the right transposition. If the piano music you are reading is in the key of C, and you see the note E, then the right alto saxophone transpsition would be C#, because after you bringing it down to the space below, it`s a C, but this is in the key of A major, so it has C# instead of C. You have to be careful of things like this. The same thing can happen in bass clef too if ur not careful. That`s how you tranpose on sight. If u wanna do it the harder way, then count everything down a minor third and up an octive (for treble cleff). Wow I must be really bored.
